As an optional tour, I visited the Holocaust Memorial Synagogue of Moscow, which is also a museum, dedicated to Russia's victory in WW II and designed by an Israeli architect. Due to the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow proper, we couldn't go to the next synagogue, but it gave extra time for the director to expand his lecture for us.
On the way back to the ship, we were stuck in a traffic jam, which was purportedly due to the motorcade of John Kerry on his way to meet with Russia's president, Vladimir Putin. Watching all the escort vehicles and limos, it was probably true.
At 2:30 today, we finally set sail on the Volga river via the Moscow Canal, headed for the city of Uglich. The canal was built 1931-37 by prisoners of Stalin; it is 79 miles long, formed by seven reservoirs, and has six locks.
